By “chirp” we mean a single very short beep every minute or two, not the alarm sound of three longer beeps repeated over and over.
First, let’s examine the key reasons that smoke alarms begin their “chirp” routine.
Smoke alarms may begin their chirp routine if they have exceeded their life expectancy. Almost all smoke alarms are only intended to be used for 10 years, after which time they are supposed to be replaced. If you have alarms that are 10 or more years old, you should replace them as soon as possible. Smoke alarms degrade over time and will not provide adequate protection if they are past their expiration date.
Smoke alarms may chirp if they are experiencing a malfunction. If you have exhausted every other reason that your alarms are chirping, you should assume they are faulty and need to be replaced.
Smoke alarms may chirp if they need to be cleaned. A build-up of dust inside your smoke alarms can cause them to chirp randomly.
The most likely reason that a smoke alarm may chirp is because the have a low battery voltage and the battery needs to be replaced.
If a smoke alarm’s battery gets old, when the temperatures in your home drop at night, the voltage will also drop from the battery. Batteries produce slightly less voltage when they cool down. If you are experiencing a chirp only at night you should definitely replace ALL the batteries in ALL your alarms as soon as possible.
