Teaching kids about fire safety.

Kids who already know what to do freeze less and move faster in a real emergency. The goal is not to scare them, it is to make the plan feel familiar and calm. Here is a simple version any family can teach in an afternoon.

What the alarm means

Teach kids that the smoke alarm sound means "go outside now," every time, even if they do not see fire. Let them hear the alarm on purpose so it is not a shock. The sound is the signal to leave, not to hide.

Two ways out, and a meeting spot

Walk each child through two ways out of every room, usually the door and the window. Then pick one outdoor meeting spot everyone goes to, like the mailbox or a neighbor's tree. Knowing where to go removes the panic of "where is everyone?"

Practice calmly

Do a relaxed home fire drill a couple of times a year. Practice getting low under smoke, touching a door to feel for heat, and walking (not running) to the meeting spot. Keep it matter-of-fact, like a seatbelt habit, so it sticks without fear.
