Why does my alarm go off when I cook or shower?
A smoke alarm that goes off when you cook or shower is not a defect you have to live with, and it is definitely not a reason to pull the battery. It almost always comes down to one of three things: where the alarm is located, what type it is, or how old it is. All three are fixable.
It is probably the placement
The most common cause is an alarm mounted too close to the kitchen or a bathroom. Steam and cooking smoke drift into the sensor and set it off. Alarms should sit at least ten feet from a stove or oven, and away from the bathroom door. Sometimes the fix is as simple as moving the alarm a few feet, or switching to a type that better tolerates the spot.
It might be the type of alarm
Older "ionization" alarms are especially sensitive around cooking smoke. Photoelectric alarms, and the newer built to the 2025 standards, are far better at telling the difference between burnt toast and a real fire. If your alarm cries wolf every dinner, the unit itself may be the problem.
Or the alarm is simply old or dirty
Dust, grease, and even small insects collect inside the sensor over the years and make false alarms more frequent. If the alarm is near the end of its 10-year life, replacing it usually solves the nuisance and the safety risk at the same time.
What not to do
Never disconnect or remove an alarm to stop the noise, even temporarily. That is how homes end up unprotected on the worst possible night. There is a real fix for every false-alarm cause, and it is almost always quick.
