How to use a fire extinguisher.

A home fire extinguisher is simple to use if you learn one word ahead of time: PASS. The time to figure it out is now, not during a fire. Here is the method, which extinguisher to own, and the most important judgment call, when to get out instead.

The PASS method

Pull the pin. Aim low, at the base of the fire, not the flames. Squeeze the handle to release the agent. Sweep from side to side across the base until the fire is out. Stand about six to eight feet back and keep an exit behind you.

Which extinguisher for a home

For a house, a multipurpose "ABC" rated extinguisher is the right choice, because it handles ordinary materials, flammable liquids, and electrical fires. Keep one in the kitchen and one in the garage, mounted where you can grab it quickly.

Fire extinguisher sizes

The general rule is to buy the largest fire extinguisher that you can handle comfortably. Larger extinguishers contain more fire retardant and are better at putting out fires. But if a large one is too hard for you to handle it’s not doing you any good. A 4 lb. extinguisher is a good choice for most people. It’s big enough to get the job done, but easy for most people to lift and use.

When to skip it and get out

An extinguisher is for a small, contained fire you catch early. If the fire is spreading, filling the room with smoke, or between you and your exit, do not fight it. Get everyone out and call 911. Your life is worth more than anything else.
