Smart smoke alarms: are they worth it?

The honest answer: smart smoke alarms are clearly worth it for some homeowners and unnecessary for the vast majority. They cost significantly more than a standard alarm, so it comes down to whether the extra features solve a real problem for you.

What they add

A smart alarm sends an alert to your phone when it goes off, even when you are away. They may also be able to tie into your home automation system. Many also announce which room is affected instead of just blaring, and they can test themselves and warn you of a low battery through the app rather than a midnight chirp.

Who benefits most

They earn their price in homes where someone is often away (travelers, a second home or rental) and who want a heads-up about a problem at the house while they are away.

The catch

Smart alarms depend on your Wi-Fi, they cost more up front, and they still follow the same 10-year replacement clock as any other alarm. Being smart also doesn't mean they are better at detecting smoke; an alarm's single purpose. And replacing only a few of your alarms with smart alarms likely means your alarms aren’t working together as intended. Get the fundamentals right first — every unit interconnected, meeting current standards, and matched so they talk to each other. If a smart alarm checks all those boxes, you have the tech skills to keep them working, and you have the budget to make them all smart, go for it.
